FG 2.6.0 crashes with some aircraft? Try this quick-fix.

Feb 2012
20

I've heard some users are struggling with FG crash (before you crash the aircraft yourself :-p) when using CitationX, 777-200ER, or b1900d. This problem happens when Aircraft is adding a menu inside it's script (and this is a Mac specific bug).

It is already fixed on my local end and a new 2.6.0 package will be made soon (Now I'm working on some more issues to be fixed). Meanwhile you can use the quick-fix updater available at: http://macflightgear.sourceforge.net/wp-content/uploads/launcher/2.6.0/GUIUpdater.tar.gz

Here's the brief instruction of updater:

  1. Choosing "Advanced Features >> Others >> Install Add-on Data" on the GUI launcher.
  2. Select the file above (or GUIUpdater.tar if Safari automatically unpack gz).

This will get you back in the air.

Note

This updater is available only applicable to a package for 10.6/10.7. If you're using 10.5 package and have similar issue, be patient and try aircraft that doesn't add a menu item to the menu bar.

FlightGear 2.6.0 has been released

Feb 2012
18

We are proud to announce that FlightGear 2.6.0 for Mac OS X has been released. Go download it from:

FlightGear 2.6.0 has so many new features, enhancements, and improvements since 2.4.0. Some major changes include:

  • Aircraft Operations
    • At selected airports, FlightGear can automatically start at an appropriate parking spot based on the size and type of your aircraft.
    • At airports which support this feature, a visual display of the taxi route on the ground guides you to the active runway, while following the correct taxiways.
  • AI system / AI Traffic
    • Less stutter in Multi-Player mode.
    • Less model-loading time by loading only the parts of the aircraft currently visible.
    • AI and multiplayer aircraft can produce sounds just like the main aircraft.
  • Flight Dynamics
    • The JSBSim flight dynamics model received a major overhaul.
  • Environment
    • The Local Weather package is integrated with the FlightGear core as "Advanced Weather". New rendering techniques allow more detailed clouds with no performance impact. High altitude clouds are rendered more realistically, and clouds move with the wind without impacting performance.
  • Interface
    • New replay mode
    • In-sim Multi-player configuration - You can change your call sign and MP server on-the-fly!
    • Much easier auto scenery downloader - just select a folder and turn it on.
    • More fps, less stutter

See http://wiki.flightgear.org/Changelog_2.6.0 for more detail.

FlightGear 2.6.0 for Mac OS X runs on OS X 10.6, and 10.7. Unfortunately this version doesn't run on Mac OS 10.5 or earlier. It's very hard to make it runs on both 10.5 and 10.7 (due to very big changes in SDKs), so I had to drop 10.5 at this moment. I'll keep tackling with make FlightGear compatible with 10.5.

Have a wonderful flight with this sensational simulator!

Note:

Fancy Cocoa Menu Bar that comes with RC1 and RC2 dropped due to stability reason. will be back on FG-git version soon.

OK, I made RC2 to improve more stability and performance of 2.6.0. Ever since RC1 was released, I got many bug-reports and feedbacks, and these helped me make RC2. I really appreciate contributers' effort and time.

The Improvements from RC1 includes:

  • Fixed: FlightGear doesn't start when the "start flight" button is pressed if the folder for the log file is missing.
  • Fixed: View Log doesn't work properly
  • Fixed: Aircraft preview doesn't work properly
  • Fixed: FlightGear crashes on exit when using Command-Q
  • Improved: frame rate
  • Improved: Installer can install frameworks.
  • Improved: some data and Aircraft
  • Improved: some more cursors (for resizing and mouse based aircraft control)

The frame rate is getting closer to the one on 2.4.0, so give it a try! You can download it from Downloads page or Sourceforge file manager

Have a wonderful flight!!

Note: There are two changes on the GUI Launcher and the Simulator menu. Now in-sim FlightGear menu appears on the Mac menu bar just like other Mac Apps. Another thing is that ~/.fgfs is not used anymore. it's moved to ~/Libarary/Application Support/FlightGear.

FlightGear 2.4.0 for Mac OS X runs on OS X 10.5, 10.6, and 10.7. It also runs on PowerPC Macs with OS X 10.5. Unfortunately this version doesn't run on Mac OS 10.4. It's very hard to make it runs on both 10.4 and 10.7 (especially terrasync and some libraries), so I had to drop 10.4.

Some of you may notice that 2.4.0 is released before the planned date - Aug. 17th, but it's not true. Here in Japan it's already Aug. 17th :-)

Anyway, Have a wonderful flight with this sensational simulator!

Note:

fgcom that comes with 2.4.0 package doesn't work on OS X 10.5, If you have OS X 10.5, you also need to download and install a fixed fgcom that is also available from the Downloads page. It works fine on OS X 10.6 or later.
